Two arrows on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two arrows run diagonally across the inner wrist, one angled up to the left and one down to the right. Each has a thin black outline, small circular dots spaced along the shaft, and a feathered fletching; the left arrow has striped feather details and a triangular head. The design is in solid black ink on pale skin against a dark green background.

Mairi counted the shafts twice before she let Tom carry them up the cliff path, because the wind off Scarth Point had a habit of taking things it liked. Two arrows, cut from the ash by the old boathouse, with dark rings of pitch set along each shaft where her grandfather had taught her to mark a distance. The left one carried striped feathers from a gull that had died on the slipway. The right one had a barbed head ground on the stone until it could split a rope.

Nobody on the island used bows any more. The lighthouse had a radio, a foghorn and a man from the mainland who came on Thursdays to check the lamp. But the Ferrier boat was overdue from Harrow Sound, the radio had gone quiet in the squall, and the keeper's wife pulled a length of tarred line from her coat pocket and said they would try the old way.

Tom drew the striped arrow first, its line trailing behind like thread through a needle. It went out over the black water and dropped short. The second went wide, then the gust caught it and carried it back across the bow, where it hooked the rigging of the drifting hull. The line ran taut as a plucked string, and somewhere in the dark a man began to shout the name of his son.

When the lamp swung round at midnight, its beam found both shafts standing in the rail like a pair of crossed hands. The boat came in on the next tide, slow and sodden, with its crew still knotted to the ash. Mairi coiled the spare line and wiped the pitch from her fingers, and she did not count the dots again.
