The relief boat came Tuesday with the paraffin and your letter, which had been three weeks in Lerwick getting dry. Dad would have sworn at the damp. I read it twice on the step while Mr Gilchrist pretended not to watch me cry over a few lines about the herring.

Keep the two marks in line when you come home, love. Don't trust the chart; trust the shore. I have cut an arrow into the lintel of the boathouse for each of us, both pointing out past the reef, so whichever one of us is at the tiller, the other can see the way.
