Two beetles with dotwork on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows two beetles stacked vertically on the inner forearm, the upper one with a blue and grey patterned shell and the lower one with an orange and brown body and a pale face-like marking. Bold black outlines define the forms, and fine dots radiate around both beetles to create a stippled halo. The colour is applied to the beetles and the background is plain skin and a grey backdrop.

The night the lamp oil ran out on Corran Holm, you carried the blue-shelled beetle down to the jetty in a tin box with holes punched through the lid. Your grandmother had kept the old ones for the fishermen, who swore by them. A beetle that walked into a storm and came out with its patterned shell unscratched was worth more than any charm, she said, and the one in your tin had done it twice.

The sea lay flat as pewter when the other boat came in. Its lantern was shuttered and its owner a stranger from the mainland who paid in silver and asked no questions. He opened his palm and showed you a second beetle, orange and brown, with a pale mark on its back like a sleeping face. Then the dots began, a fine spray lifting off the water and circling both insects, as though the sea itself were counting them.
"Your grandmother sold me the first one," he said. "She never told you what it was for."
You understood then that the tin was never the cargo. Each beetle had been traded for a gap in the reef, a path through the rocks at slack tide, and the dots were the route drawn out in salt. Your grandmother had been charting the channel with living things for forty years, and she had kept the second beetle back for someone who would know to look.
You opened the lid. The blue beetle climbed onto your wrist, turned once towards the reef, and held still while the water lit up beneath it.
