Two ghosts in a framed box with No Feet
Traditional · Black and grey · Flash
The design shows two simple ghost figures with round heads, dark eyes and wavy hems, set side by side inside a black-filled, slightly tilted frame. The words NO FEET sit in a banner along the bottom edge, and spiderweb linework fills the background behind the frame. The drawing uses bold black outlines with grey stippled shading, and a small patch of colour appears at the top right.

The notice had hung in the hallway of Gull Street longer than the wallpaper, and Mrs Roe swore the two ghosts had put it up themselves. Their little black frame sat crooked beside the coat hooks, with NO FEET across the bottom in capitals that nobody living would admit to painting. I read it every morning on my way to the kettle, and every morning it said the same thing.

Nobody in Porthleven believed a word of it until the Pemberton brothers took the back room in March. They were carpenters, loud and heavy in the boot, and by the second Tuesday the taller one had woken to find a pale shape sitting on the end of his bed, hem rippling, eyes like two spilt drops of ink. It asked him, very politely, to take his boots off. He didn't. By Friday the stairwell corners had thickened with web and both brothers were walking the harbour wall in their socks, muttering about lights going out one by one across the bay.
So the boots were my job. I carried them down to the cellar in a flour sack, meaning to lock them away until the brothers went home, and found the two ghosts waiting on the bottom step. They didn't say anything. They only floated there, hems swaying, watching me the way a landlady watches a man who has missed the rent.
When I came back up, they had folded themselves into the frame by the coat hooks as neatly as letters into an envelope. I hung the boots beside them, toes up, the way Mrs Roe likes things kept, and went to make the tea.
