Two hummingbirds in flight line drawing

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

Two hummingbirds are drawn in mid-flight, one above and one below, with long beaks and outstretched wings. The birds are rendered in dark ink linework with hatched shading on the wings, tails and bodies, set against a plain pale background. Small partial bird silhouettes appear at the top right edge of the frame.

Sit down by the oven, Tomas, and keep your hands off that tray until I finish, because the dough knows when someone is listening and it will sulk. Forty winters I have unlocked this shop before the milk cart, and I have never told you about the birds. You think I invent them. Perhaps I do. My mother swore to it, and she never lied about anything except her age.

It was the week of the hard frost, when the flour came up from the mill grey as ash. Before the first light a sound like a tailor's needle stitched through the dark, and two birds no bigger than a thumb hung over the rye sack. Their beaks were long as hatpins and their wings blurred so fast the eye had to fill them in with ink. The higher one had a sharp face and a tail fanned like a dropped card. The lower one dipped beneath it, and they circled the proving baskets, arguing or courting, my mother said, which in birds looks much the same.

She set a spoon of syrup on the cooling rack and went back to her knocking. They came down to it one after the other, the lower bird drinking while the higher one watched the window, where the sky was turning from soot to pewter. Then the higher one flicked its wing against the glass as if to say enough, and the pair shot out through the back door in a single stitch of motion.

When the loaves came out, there were two wet dents in the frost on the sill, and my mother wore that spoon on a string around her neck until the day she died. Nobody in this town believes me. Now, that dough. Tell me what it wants.
