Two seahorses with bubbles, tattoo and flash
Back · Colour · Photo
The left half shows two seahorses in orange and yellow, facing each other with curled tails, with pale blue bubbles rising between them and below. The shading is soft and blended, with fine detail along the seahorses' crests and bodies. The right half is a flat, stylised seahorse design in green, black and grey on a beige background, set diagonally against the photograph.

The sea off Gull Point had gone sulky for a fortnight, and everyone in Pennick agreed it was the fault of the two seahorses in the bucket outside Dunn's chandlery. Old Jack Harrow had hauled them up in a lobster pot the week before, one the colour of marmalade and one the yellow of a wet primrose, and they had refused to look at each other from the moment they were tipped into the tin bath.

Mrs Dunn, who kept the chandlery and believed most things the tide told her, said they were newly wed and had fallen out over whose turn it was to hold the tail. Her husband said it was nonsense. Still, every morning the children went down to the quay to see whether the pair had moved closer, and every morning the orange one had drifted to the far corner while the yellow one hung in the water with his crest folded flat, sulking like a boy sent to bed without supper.
On the Sunday before the regatta, Jack's granddaughter Ellen, nine years old and sick of the whole business, leaned over the bath with a jam jar in one hand and said plainly, "You're both just cold." She tipped in a spoonful of warm water from her tea. The seahorses rose to the surface, bumped noses, and stayed there. Bubbles came up from them, thin as thread, and drifted over the quay wall.
By Monday the bubbles had reached the lighthouse steps and the boats were sailing easy. Mrs Dunn swore the sea had stopped sulking. Ellen let the pair go off the harbour wall at evening, and they sank down together with their tails coiled, trailing a string of silver bubbles like a necklace someone had forgotten to fasten.
