The rain had been falling on the market at Harrowgate since the bells of St Oswin's rang for none, and the stallholders had stopped swearing at it by the second week. Old Mab Trewin kept her bird-seller's cart under a tarpaulin at the end of Fish Row, and she sold only one thing, which was a bird that could not fly.

It was a grey-winged thing with a tail like a falling blade, and she had carved it from a single piece of willow the winter her husband drowned in the weir. Children came to look at it and went away disappointed. A tinker asked what it was for. Mab said it was for waiting, and he laughed and bought a kettle instead.

On the last Saturday of the rain, a girl came up Fish Row with a purse of coins and a scroll of paper under her arm. She asked whether the bird could fly if the wind were right. Mab took the carving from its nail and turned it so the curl at its back caught the light from the lantern. The wind, she said, was never right. You had to wind the spiral by hand, one turn for each thing you were sorry for, and then set it down facing the way you wished to go.

The girl counted coins onto the board. Mab watched her wind it, slow and careful, and when she finally set it on the wet planks, the tail lifted a hair's breadth above the wood, as though something under the rain had breathed on it. Neither of them said anything. The market went on drumming above them, and the bird, for the length of one breath, pointed north.
