Two skeletons with a tree of branches and roots
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
The design shows two skeletons standing side by side and facing each other, with their arms reaching upwards and merging into leafy branches that form a tree shape. Mo had the secateurs in one hand and the grafting knife in the other when Ruth came out of the kitchen with two mugs and a face that said the frost had got into the hives again. Neither of them mentioned the hives. They walked down between the rows of Bramley and Egremont Russet, their boots squeaking on rime, until they reached the two old trees at the bottom of Long Field that nobody had ever managed to kill.

Their grandfather had planted them the spring the roof went on the barn, one for each of them, and had made them promise never to let the roots tangle. Ruth kept that promise by never once digging near the other trunk. Mo kept it by bending the lowest limb of her own tree, every February, across the gap until the two crowns met in a knot of pale wood.
Today the frost lay thick on the grass and the bare branches looked like a handful of wire. Ruth set her mug on the gatepost and pointed at the grafts. "Look at that," she said. "It's taken." Where the limbs had fused, a single green bud was showing, the first of the year and impossibly early for January.
Mo cut a length of scion, wrapped it in damp sacking and tucked it inside her coat against her ribs. "Then we split the crop," she said. "Same as always." Ruth laughed and held out her hand, and they stood there in the cold, looking up at the one tree that had decided to be both.
