Botanical · Mixed · Flash

A drawn tattoo design showing a solid black silhouette shape with two abstract figures, set against three coral-pink lilies. Green vines with curling tendrils and fine black outlines frame the flowers at the base. The flowers use soft shading in pink and red, and the composition is centred on a white background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain had come in the night, the first in four years, and by seven the Tallow Flats road was steaming under a sky the colour of weak tea. Nell pulled the van onto the shoulder where the land dipped toward the salt pan, because her grandmother had once said that lilies would come back wherever water ran underground, and she had never believed it until now. Pip was still asleep in the back, one sock off, a dried crust of toast on her cheek.

The lilies were everywhere, coral and tipped with gold, pushing up through the cracked clay and wrapping themselves around the old fence posts as if they had been waiting there all along. Nell walked out in her boots, the ground soft and cool, and crouched beside a clump that had split a fence wire clean in two. She thought of Edie's tin of bulbs in the glovebox, the paper labels gone soft, the handwriting that said Do not plant before the rain. She had carried the tin for three states without opening it.

When she looked back, Pip was standing at the van door with the sun behind her, and their two shadows stretched across the wet sand and joined where the vines ran. Nell stood up slowly, brushed the clay from her knees, and fetched the tin. She pressed the last of the bulbs into the mud at the edge of the pan, one, then another, not caring whether anything would ever come of them. Pip ran over, barefoot, asking what they were for, and Nell told her they were for later.
