"Mind the rope, Tom, or the swallows will have you over the side before the tide does." That was Old Jory, who had worked the Penhallow out of St Ives for forty years and never once looked at a bird without an opinion.

The boy did not mind the rope. He was watching the two swallows that had come down the harbour wall to the bow, dipping and banking over the mackerel boxes as if they had business with the tide. Jory said they were the same pair that nested under the wheelhouse every summer, and that a swallow never forgot a boat it had once slept in. Tom thought that was the sort of thing old men said to stop boys asking about the wreck.
The wreck was the Mary Ann, lost off the Brisons in a February gale with all hands. Jory had hauled her fishbox up the cliff path the following spring and carried it home himself. The swallows came back to the Penhallow that May, earlier than the rest, and Jory never once shooed them off the rail.
On the last morning of the season they went out past the pier light. Tom watched the pair skim low over the swell and turn toward the headland in one long, shared curve. Jory took off his cap. "There," he said. "Now we know the way home is clear."
