Nobody in the valley had seen a wheel drawn that way. He used no straight lines at all. He set a dot with the point of his quill, then another beside it, and each dot took as long as one Ave to dry. Where the wheel curled outward he let the dots run like a thread of smoke, and where it stopped he set a sharp diamond, one for every hour the wind had blown through the gate. Villagers climbed up to watch him work and walked back down quiet.

By Candlemas the wheel covered the chapter house floor from the door to the altar step. The abbot walked it barefoot, counting the dots with his toes, and found there were exactly as many as there had been nights since the last hard winter. Oswin had never told anyone he had counted them himself, one a night, sitting up with a lamp while the others slept.

When the thaw came the wheel stayed dark on the stone and the rest of the floor went pale with mud. The abbot had the floor scrubbed three times. The ink would not lift. Oswin was buried beneath the lowest step, and on feast days the children of the valley still hop from diamond to diamond, saying the numbers aloud until they reach the centre.
