Two swallows, one carrying a key

Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash

A pen drawing on cream paper shows two swallows facing each other, one holding a key in its feet. The wings and bodies are built from fine stippled dots and hatched lines, with solid black areas on the backs and tails. The design is shown in black ink only, with the two birds set on a diagonal across the sheet and a black pen resting at the top edge.

The swallows came back to Ashby Lock the same week the river rose over the towpath, and by the third morning you had stopped expecting them to be sensible about anything. From the bank you watched the smaller bird skid down over the lock gate with a key swinging from its feet, its mate wheeling after it, both of them chattering as if they were arguing about a bill.

The key was your grandmother's, the one for the padlock on the paddle gear, and she had sent you out with it on a string round your neck the night the flood came. You had lost it somewhere between the lock-keeper's hut and the barge. Your mother said a key can't fly. You said that was a pity, because somebody had clearly told these two otherwise.

You followed them up the weedy steps to the old mill wall, where they had built a mud cup under the sill. The key lay in the nest like an egg. The mate perched on the lip of the wall and looked at you sideways with one black eye, as though you were the careless one. You crouched in the wet and waited.

When the water dropped at dawn you climbed back down and found the gate chain still locked, the barge riding high and useless on the grey pool. You worked the key from the moss, fitted it to the padlock and turned it. Overhead the swallows went in and out of the mill eaves without once looking back at the gate they had made you open.
