Mandala butterfly and arrow design
Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash
A pen drawing on white paper shows a butterfly with intricate mandala patterns in its wings and body, a small outlined butterfly above, and a long arrow with a stippled dotwork tip below. The linework is fine and uniform, with the mandala detail filled by dots and curls. A black fineliner pen lies at the upper right, and the design is centred and drawn in black ink only.

The wasps had found the windfalls by ten, so I dragged the trestle table into the shade of the Bramley and worked with my back to the fruit. Aunt Maud came out with two mugs of tea and set one down beside the pen without asking. The ink was drying on the paper in tiny black points, and I was on the third ring of petals before I stopped to look at what I had made.

The centre had started as a single dot, the way Dad taught me to begin a mandala, and everything else grew outward from it. I had copied the wings from a painted lady that died on the kitchen windowsill in July, its dust still bright on my thumb when I picked it up. The arrow was harder. Uncle Stan had shot one into the medlar the summer before he went into hospital, and it was still there, grey with rain, its feathers split. I drew it from memory, got the shaft too long, and corrected it by hand.
The tip took the whole afternoon. Every dot was a decision, and I counted them the way Stan used to count apples into a crate, under my breath. Maud read over my shoulder and said I had drawn the thing flying away rather than coming in. She was right, though I hadn't meant it. I thought about changing it. Then I looked at the small outline above the big wings, the one I'd added as an afterthought, and understood it was already leaving.
When the sun dropped behind the cider house I pinned the sheet to the barn door with two rusted nails. A real butterfly came down out of the hedge and settled on the pen, opened and closed its wings twice, then went off over the orchard wall in the direction the drawing pointed.
