She planted them at the forest's edge, where the birches thin out, and forgot them through the hard frost. Come March, one stem pushed up through the mulch, thin as a fishbone, and it did not stop at the wall. It ran on, straight as a plumb line, past the gate, up the bank and into the wood. Mab followed it with a lantern every night, and every night the moon hung a little lower over the last pale leaf, as though it were leaning down to read.
On the night of the new moon the stem bent, and the first bloom opened in the dark, cupped and shadowed as a hand. Mab knelt and saw a second flower waiting a palm's width below it, not yet open, dotted with dew like the sky before rain. She didn't pick them. Folk say she sat there until dawn, listening to the wood breathe, and when the sun came up the stem had gone back into the earth, leaving only the moon still hanging over the birches.
