Two winged ball designs in black line
Black and grey · Flash
The image shows two black ink line drawings of a round, ball-shaped form with a small central face-like detail and feathered wings. The upper design has wings swept upwards in a gentle arc, while the lower design has wings spread horizontally across the sheet. The linework is clean and even, with feather detail built from fine strokes and no shading, set against a warm, aged tan background.

Dear Mr Okonedo,

Yes, the ball came in on the 6.40 from Crewe, wedged between a seat and the bin on Platform Four. I should have sent it to the office straight away, but it was humming. Not a tick or a buzz, a thrum, the sort a kettle makes just before it boils. I held it to my ear the way my mother used to with shells, and that was when the wings moved. Two little feathered wings, folded flat against the gold, opening and shutting as if they had only just remembered what they were for.
I kept it in my coat pocket for three days. Mrs Penrose at the buffet asked what I was carrying, and I said a bird's egg, which made her laugh. On Thursday the 4.15 was held at the signal past Hadley for forty minutes, and the wings beat against my ribs so hard that I took the ball out in the staff room and set it on the windowsill. It rose straight up past the gantry lights, turned once above the sidings, and was gone over the allotments before the driver had released the brake.
Your claim form is enclosed. Please don't ask me to describe it again. I have told the duty manager it was a toy, and that is the only lie I have told this month.
Yours sincerely, Ruth Calloway Lost Property, Platform Four
