Swallow in flight, ink design
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A single swallow is shown mid-flight, wings fully spread and tail long and forked, viewed from below. The bird is drawn in black ink with fine, controlled linework, with feather detail and light hatching on the body and wings. It sits on a plain cream paper background with no colour and no other elements.

The swallow got in through the scriptorium shutter the morning Brother Aldous sent you up the ladder to mend it, and by the time you had the hinge pinned it was circling the rafters with the calm of something that had paid rent here for years. You stood with the hammer in your hand and watched it cut across the light. Its tail split like a pair of scissors opening and closing over the inkwells.

Aldous wanted the Psalter finished before the bishop's visit, and the margin of the eleventh leaf was still blank. 'Draw me a bird,' he said, 'something that goes somewhere.' So you sat at the sloped desk with your pen and the cheap cream vellum that had come up from the port, and you tried to get the wings right. The trouble was that every time you looked up, the bird had changed its mind. You learned to draw the moment it tipped, wings fully spread, the body seen from underneath as it dropped past the window and then climbed. Hatching for the belly, a few hair-fine strokes for each primary feather.
On the last evening of the copying, the shutter swung and the swallow was gone. Aldous came to inspect and laid his thumb on the leaf, and said nothing for so long that you thought you had ruined it. Then he said the bird looked as if it had been lifted from the air and pressed flat, and asked whether you would sign it. You wrote nothing. You left the ink to dry and went down to the harbour, where the first real swallows were skimming the water toward the sea wall, and you watched until the last one turned over the mole and was lost against the grey.
