Typewriter quote across the upper back
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey photograph shows a line of typewriter-style lettering tattooed diagonally across the upper back, close to the neck and shoulder. The words read I was a drizzle and she was a hurricane, set in a single slanting line with the letters in a crisp, even weight. The dark background makes the clean black ink stand out against the pale skin.

He paid for eleven words. He had written them in pencil, crossed out twice, and wanted them in capitals, which she refused, because the machine's capitals came down heavy and made everything sound like a shouted warning. She typed them in lower case instead, letter by letter, the bell ringing at the end of each line like a small chapel bell.
I was a drizzle and she was a hurricane.
He stood very still while she pulled the sheet free. Then he laughed, a short surprised sound, and said that was exactly how it had been, that he had spent three summers being rained on by her and had never once wanted to be dry.
Ivy did not tell him she had typed a hundred love letters for other people and not one had ever made her smile. She folded the paper twice, slid it into an envelope, and licked the flap, thinking that some weather was worth recording even when no forecast would ever call it in time.
