Botanical · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a fern frond with its tip curled into a spiral at the top, with smaller leaflets running down a thin stem. The linework is crisp and the leaflets and spiral are shaded with grey tones to give depth. The tattoo is shown in black ink and grey on a bare lower leg, photographed against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had lain on Hobb's Rise since the second week of January, and by February the bracken along the wall had gone the colour of stewed tea. My uncle Eddie would not have it cut. He said the frost did the job better and the ewes could have the dead stalks for bedding. I thought him stubborn then. I was nineteen and wanted the top field tidy before the lambing started.

Dad's old crook hung on a nail in the byre, and it was the only thing Eddie let me touch without asking. He used to walk me up in May to show me the fern croziers, those tight green spirals pushing through the mud like something being wound back into a clock. "Nothing in a hurry," he'd say, "and it still gets to the top." On the last morning of February I went up with the feed sack and found the crust of snow broken open beneath the wall. One curl had pushed through already, no bigger than my thumb, dark with cold and wound so tight it looked like a fist.

I knelt in the wet and fed no ewes that morning. I thought of Eddie's hands, knotted with arthritis since the autumn, and how he had stopped coming up the hill. I drove down in the Land Rover, fetched him in two coats, and we sat in the cab with the heater roaring while the frost went to lace on the windscreen.

He said nothing when he saw it. He leaned on the wall with both hands on his stick and watched the tip loosen as the thaw came up the slope, one turn at a time. Then he laughed, low in his chest, and said that was the winter done, and the sheep could have the rest of the bracken.
