The frost came early this year, and I've lost the last of the runner beans, but I wanted to tell you about the night the triangle appeared over the allotment. Not a real triangle, I know. Mr Okafor from plot nine swore he saw it first, a black three-cornered gap in the sky where the stars went thin, and he had a white horse standing inside it as if someone had cut it from paper and held it up to the light.
We all trooped out with torches, the whole lot of us in dressing gowns and wellies. The blue overhead was bruised purple at the edges, pink where the streetlamps bled into it, and the stars were scattered like someone had flicked a toothbrush at the dark. Mr Okafor said the horse was searching for the old Bramley that blew down in March. I told him that was nonsense. Then I saw it turn its head, and I didn't say anything at all.
Come up at the weekend. The Bramley's stump is still in the ground, and I've planted a sapling beside it, labelled with a bit of slate so you'll know which one to water. The unicorn hasn't come back since, but the specks of light are still there when I look up, faint and white, and I find I don't mind waiting.
