The night the lamps went out up at the castle, my mother was already at the gate with a shawl over her head. Nobody in Hollin Dene had ever seen the towers dark. The stars were said to sit in those windows on clear nights, which was why the forest at the village edge was never cut back, not even in the hard winters.

I took the birch path with my brother's old lantern, the one with the cracked horn panel that threw blue light across the ferns. The trees thinned where the briar wall began, higher than a man, and in the middle of it a single rose was open, the colour of plums, though it was October. Its leaves had a green shine like pond weed under glass. Roses like that did not grow in Hollin Dene. They grew where someone had asked for them.

The castle gate stood unlatched and the courtyard was full of people standing very still, looking up. A woman I did not know said the lamp-lighter had gone to sleep under the rose and not woken. I said I would fetch him. The briars let me through only after I gave my name, and then the path opened ahead of me like a door that had been waiting.

The lamp-lighter was asleep in a chair of petals with his hands folded. I lit my lantern from his and the towers came back one window at a time, from the top down, the way a village wakes. When I walked home the rose had shut behind me, and the stars were back where they belonged, plain and far away, and I have never once since told anyone which of us was dreaming.
