Unicorn seahorse with anchor design
Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash
A line drawing of a seahorse with a unicorn horn, a wavy mane and frilled fins, curling around a rope-wrapped anchor. The seahorse body is filled with swirling dots, scales and decorative bands, with small bubbles and seaweed shapes around it. The sketch is in dark pencil and bold outline on pale paper, with no shading beyond the decorative detail.

The seahorse came up in old Aske's net on the morning the herring boats were laid up, and nobody on Carrick quay believed it until my brother lifted it from the bucket and the spiral horn on its brow caught the lamplight like wet glass. It was no bigger than my hand. Its mane floated out in the cold like weed, and when it breathed, bubbles rose in a thin string and popped against the lamp.

Aske wanted it sold to the aquarium men in Scarborough. Mam said nothing and took down her ropes instead. I had spent the autumn learning to lay hemp tight, every strand turning the same way, and I knew a wrapped line holds longest when it is bound from the bottom up. So I wound tarred rope round the old fluke anchor from the shed and set the seahorse against its shank, curling its tail about the iron the way a child holds a stick. I told Aske it could not drift out with the ebb like that and would stay where it was put.
All through the cold weeks I went down at slack water with brine shrimp scooped from the rock pools, and it grew a little, its frilled fins spreading over the green stone. Aske came down once, grumbling about the price of rope, and stood a long while with his cap in his hands. He never mentioned Scarborough again.
On the first warm day of March I cut the lashings. The seahorse did not leave at once. It turned a slow circle round the anchor, bubbles climbing its horn, then slipped down through the green water toward the channel. The last thing I saw was the silver of its mane and the pale rope-marks still on the iron where it had been held.
