Venus flytrap tattoo on the side ribs

Botanical · Ribs · Colour · Photo

A large Venus flytrap with open green and red jaws sits across the side of the torso, with small leaves and sprigs curling beneath it. The linework is bold and the shading is smooth, with red splatter marks spreading around the plant. Green and red ink dominate against the skin, and the shirt is lifted to reveal the full design.

Nobody in Calder Bridge bought a flytrap until Ada Pruett started keeping them in the back of the feed store, in tin pans of wet sphagnum she carried up from Sallow Fen on the Tuesday cart. She sold them for a shilling, and she told every buyer the same thing: the plant closes on what moves twice, so never feed it what you only mean to touch once.

Dell Hobbs came in the wet week of March with his wife's ledger under his arm and a shilling already in his fist. He wanted the biggest one. Ada took him to the window where the sun came through green and cracked, and she gave him a cricket on a pin to try it. The jaws shut with a click like a latch. Dell laughed too loud and went home.

He came back in April. The ledger was heavier now, and the names in it were the men who had lent him money, and he asked Ada how many times a thing had to move before the plant would take it. She told him twice. He nodded and went out, and that night the red on the lobes of the trap in the window looked brighter, as if it had been fed.

In May the ledger was found on the feed store step, open at a page where every debt was struck through in the same careful hand. Dell Hobbs was not seen after that, though his boots were found by the fen path with the toes turned in towards the water. Ada kept the plant. It opened every morning, and its mouth was always shut by evening.
