Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A bare back is shown from behind, with a line of uppercase serif lettering running vertically down the centre of the spine. The letters are set in black and grey with crisp, even edges and sit in two separated groups. The skin is warm toned and lightly lit, with dark clothing and a bra strap visible at the edges of the frame.

Dear Marnie,

The rain has been coming sideways across the market since Tuesday, so the awning on Stall Nine has sagged again and I've spent the morning under it with a bucket. Your mother would have laughed at me. I was up a stepladder in a bin bag with a tin of gold leaf, and Pat from the fishmonger's kept shouting that I'd be struck by lightning, which by then I'd almost have welcomed.

I finished the banner for the Co-op hall on Friday. You'll remember the old one with the cracked paint over the stage. They wanted new serif capitals, PROM QUEEN, stacked down a length of canvas. I'd forgotten how much I like the spacing on those. You have to leave a proper gap between the two words or the eye just slides off into mush. I left a wide pool of nothing between them, and the lettering sat there looking almost lonely. The council lad thought it was a mistake. I didn't correct him.

Then on Thursday the girl from the chip shop asked me to do the same lettering on the back of her cousin's van, which is how I ended up explaining to a teenager that you can't rush a serif. She said it was for a bet. I told her most good things are.

Anyway. Ring me when the rain stops. The kettle's still broken, but I've learned to live with it, the way I've learned to live with most things.

Love, Dad
