Script quote tattoo along the ribs

Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A woman in a sequined top and leather jacket shows a multi-line black script quote tattooed vertically along her side over the ribs. The lettering has fine, even linework with soft grey shading, and the text runs down the length of the torso against her midriff. A small tattoo is also visible on her forearm, and the photograph is taken from the side at close range.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Every boat out of Skerrow followed the same channel between the two black rocks, because that was how the fathers had gone and their fathers before them. Old Maud Tully said the channel was a path laid down by the drowned, and a man who trusted it would never come home short. Her grandson Tam thought this was the kind of thing old women said to keep boys in their beds.

The autumn the herring went wrong, the whole fleet came back empty three weeks running. The men sat in the harbour house arguing over charts nobody had redrawn since the king's surveyor died. Tam listened, then went down to the slip at low water with a tin of white paint and a coil of cord.

He did not go out the channel. He rowed his father's coble north past the rocks where no boat was supposed to go, and every half mile he tied a bright buoy to a stake in the shallows and painted an arrow on a flat stone. Three days he did it. On the fourth, Maud came down to the quay with her shawl pulled tight and watched the boats file past the old channel toward the new one, following his marks.

They came home that night heavy with fish. Nobody said anything about the drowned. Tam's mother stood at the top of the steps and counted the boats in, and when the last one reached the slip she pressed a hand to her mouth. The arrows are still there, though the paint has long since gone grey, and the fleet has never once gone the old way since.
