Victorian London street sleeve in black and grey
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
Three views of a full sleeve covering the upper arm and forearm, with a large Roman numeral clock face at the top and a gentleman in a top hat and tailcoat standing before it. Below, a street scene includes an East End London sign, terraced buildings, a gas lamp and a cyclist on a penny-farthing, with a bridge and spires at the shoulder. The work uses fine greyscale shading and smooth tonal gradients across the whole piece, with no colour ink.

Mr Ambrose Cottle had wound the clock at St Anne's Cross every morning for thirty-one years, and on a foggy Tuesday in November he did not come down the steps at seven. The lamplighter, Tobias Reed, noticed first, because the gas along Pennyfield Row was still burning when it should have been turned off, and nobody had told him why.

He found the old man in the tower room with his coat still buttoned and his hat on the hook by the door, as if he meant to go out again at any moment. The great minute hand had stopped a quarter past the hour. On the bench lay a pocket watch with its back open, and beside it a note in copperplate: The Hadley boy will want this by noon. Tell him the balance is true.
Tobias had never ridden a penny-farthing in his life. He borrowed one from the yard behind the chandler's, wobbled past two carts and a costermonger's barrow, and reached the Hadley boy's lodging on Brick Lane with the watch wrapped in a handkerchief inside his waistcoat. The boy, grown now and wearing a clerk's stiff collar, took it, held it to his ear, and laughed with wet eyes.
That evening Tobias climbed the tower stairs and set the minute hand moving again with a gentle push, the way Mr Cottle had taught him. Below, the lamps came on one by one along the street, and the clock, at last, agreed with them.
