Black and grey full sleeve tattoo on an arm showing a horned, skull-faced figure with wings, snakes, skulls and a lantern, photographed from three angles.

Horned skull figure and lantern full sleeve

Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A full sleeve design centred on a long-haired, horned figure with a skull face, glowing white eyes and a cross on the forehead, with feathered wings sweeping down the arm. Below it, coiled snakes, a horned creature, skulls and a lantern sit among wisps of smoke and a pale moon behind the head. The work uses fine linework and fine stippled shading in black and grey, photographed from the front and both sides against a dark background.

The lantern gutters twice before the last switchback, and twice you coax it back with fingers that have stopped reporting the cold. Below, the road is a grey thread pulled tight through the snow of Scarrow Gap, and somewhere in the drift the carter from the hut is still shouting your name. The wind folds the sound up small and throws it away.

At the cairn the Mother of Ash waits as she always does, long hair heavy with frost, her horns curving up into the pale moon like a pair of spent sickles. Her wings are folded tight against the rock. Snakes uncoil from the stones at her feet, and the grinning skulls of the men who tried to bargain with her lie in the scree where the wind has left them. The carters say she keeps a tally of everyone who crosses, and that she has never once miscounted.

She lifts her skull face toward you, and the white eyes bloom. "One short," she says, and her voice is the creak of a gate in an empty yard. You look past her shoulder to the slope, where a small yellow light is still climbing, slow and stubborn, carried by someone who refuses to stop calling. You had thought the lantern was for finding your own way down. It was only ever a way of answering.

You hang the lantern on the cairn's iron hook, the way the others did, and the shouting below stops. Smoke rises from the wick and curls past her horns. Her tally is full again.
