Vintage diving helmet on a calf
Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo
A brass deep-sea diving helmet with round viewports, a star-shaped fitting and a coiled hose is tattooed on the calf. Bold black outlines define the forms, with brown, ochre and gold shading giving the metal a rounded, dimensional look. Green seaweed and blue water wisps sit behind the helmet, which fills most of the frame against a light, dotted background.

The hose was the thing that kept me honest. Pa had coiled it on the quay every evening for thirty years, twelve fathoms of rubber and copper, and he never once let it kink where the gulls could see. Now it was my turn, and the harbourmaster's boy stood there with a bucket of tea, watching me fumble the star-shaped fitting onto the air pump as if it were a live eel.

The helmet weighed more than my sister's first baby. Brass, with four round glass eyes that clouded with my own breath, and a smell of tar and old oil inside that never quite washed out. Down I went off the wall at Porthgwidden, boots first, the green light thickening until the wrecked trawler rose out of it like a sleeping animal, her ribs furred with weed and wrasse flicking through her open hatch.
Something had been left in her cabin. A tin box, sealed with wax, and a brass key on a string. I tugged the line twice, which meant send me up, and the boy hauled hard. Halfway the hose snagged on the rail, and for a long, bright moment I thought the sea had decided to keep me. Then the cord gave and I broke the surface into a grey afternoon with my ears ringing.
The box held a letter in Pa's hand, dated the week before he sold the boat. It said only: the water remembers what the land forgets. I read it twice in the wheelhouse with my hair still dripping and the tea gone cold, then rang the harbour bell, which is what you do when you have something to say to the whole town.
