Starship in a bottle with red flowers
Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo
A starship resembling the Millennium Falcon sits inside a glass bottle with a cork stopper, with a curled banner reading NEVER TELL ME THE ODDS across it. Bold black outlines frame the ship, bottle and leaves, with shaded grey metal on the ship and a blue-teal backdrop. Red flowers and green leaves fill the lower corners, and the design is shown on a limb against a paper towel background.

The bottle had been rolling under the bench at the junction for three days before anyone thought to pick it up, and by then I had already decided it was mine. Inside, a grey freighter hung in the glass as if it were parked on nothing, its hull scuffed like it had been in a few scrapes. The cork was jammed hard in the neck, and a curled strip of paper had been pushed in beside the ship with the words NEVER TELL ME THE ODDS printed across it in faded capitals.

Eli, the night porter, said to leave it alone, that bottles with ships in them were bad luck on platforms. I didn't leave it. I set it on the lost property counter between a brolly and a child's wellington and waited, because people always come back for the strange things first. On the Thursday a man in a wet green anorak leaned over the counter, looked at the bottle, and laughed so hard he had to hold the edge of the wood.
"My dad built that," he said. "Bet my brother he could fit a whole ship through a bottle neck. Took him eleven winters. Brother lost, so the bottle went to the loser, and the loser lost it on the four-fifteen." He wiped his eyes. "Dad always said the odds were rubbish. Said that right up until they weren't."
He didn't take it. He asked me to keep it on the sill where the last train's lamp comes through the glass. So I did. When the four-fifteen pulled out that night, the light went through the bottle and the little freighter threw its shadow the whole length of the counter, straight across the lost umbrellas and the wellington, and out onto the platform where nobody was waiting.
