Virgo zodiac symbol with hearts on the neck

Neck · Mixed · Photo

The image shows a Virgo zodiac symbol tattooed on the back of a neck, with dark hair falling across the upper left. The glyph is outlined and shaded in black and grey, giving it a dimensional ribbon-like appearance. Three small red hearts sit inside the lower loop, providing the only colour against the skin tone, and the tattoo is centred in a close crop.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ferry at Kell Ford had not carried anyone across in nine years, not since the bridge went up on the eastern side, so when the grey mare came down the bank at dusk with a girl on her back, the boatman Aldo Renner thought she was lost. She had a sack of barley across her knees and a ribbon of wet hair stuck to her cheek. She asked him to take her to the far bank, and he asked what she had to pay with.

She opened the sack. Inside, wrapped in cloth, were three loaves no bigger than a fist, still warm. Her mother had baked them at the hearth of the customs house, she said, the morning the guards came to weigh the grain. Every measure of wheat in the valley had to be counted at the border and taxed, and the girl had been sent to carry next spring's seed across the river where the king's men did not look. Aldo laughed and said a river did not care about a king. She said that was exactly why she had come to him.

Halfway over the current swung the boat sideways, and the girl stood up with the sack held against her chest. Aldo shouted at her to sit. She untied the cord and tipped the seed into the water, all of it, while the watchtower bell began to ring. Three small red lights, no bigger than rowan berries, rose from the river and went ahead of them to the far bank, and the guards there lowered their lanterns and let the boat pass without a word.
