Black and grey tattoo of a detailed Evenstar pendant with elvish script above and below it, placed on the upper back.

Evenstar pendant with script on upper back

Back · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a stylised pendant with a central five-petalled flower set within a pointed, leaf-like frame, topped by a loop and finished with a looping lower tail. Two lines of angular, cursive elvish script sit above and below the motif, outlined in bold black linework. The pendant is shaded in greys with highlights that give it a raised, metallic look, and the script is solid black against the pale skin.

Dear Nell,

The silver came up from Penzance on Tuesday wrapped in a fishwife's oilcloth, so I have spent two nights bent over the bench with the loupe screwed in my eye, and I am glad to tell you the thing is finished. Mr Harrow wanted a pendant for the chapel fête raffle, a leaf-shaped piece with a flower at its heart, and he said I was to keep it plain. I did not keep it plain.

Each petal I cut by hand with the smallest graver we own, and when the five were done I went back and roughed the leaf behind them so the lamp would catch it like something dug out of a hillside. Harrow came in on Thursday, saw the star in the middle, and asked who had taught me to write those hooks. I told him the letters came from a book Father kept under the counter, the one with the cracked spine. He turned it over in his hands for a long time and then gave it back without a word.

The loop at the top is made to turn on a chain, and the tail at the bottom goes round twice, so the whole thing never quite sits still. I have pinned the two lines of script to the velvet tray, one above the flower and one below, and I read them aloud when the shop is empty, though I still could not tell you what half of them mean.

Harrow says the raffle can wait until the spring. He says the pendant is not for sale, and that I am to keep the tray on the bench where I can see it. Come home at Christmas and read the words for me, if you can. I would rather hear them in your voice than my own.

Your loving sister, Ada
