Volkswagen-themed back piece in black and grey

Traditional · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A large back piece centred on two Volkswagen Beetles with wings and flames above, with a VW heart badge, a Volkswagen script banner and a row of vans and buses along the lower back. Stars, arrows and smaller emblems fill the gaps, with bold outlines and grey shading on the metal and wings. The image is a mostly flat, close view of the full back with no colour ink.

Nell had given up on the heater and sat wrapped in her uncle's oilskin when the engine finally caught on the fourth turn of the key. Snow blew sideways through the open barn doors and settled on the bench, where the carburettor sat in a row of jam jars. Beyond the wall the valley had vanished under white, and the only colour left was the rust of the old tractor by the gate.

Ray had bought the Beetle off a man in Hexham in 1974, paid for it with cash and a ewe, and rebuilt it twice since. Its twin sat under a tarpaulin in the far corner, the one Dessie Parr drove, and every spring the pair of them, with the lads' vans and a battered minibus behind, rolled to the coast in a line so long the ferry man at Blyth used to count them out loud. Ray always took the lead car and waved at the cows as if they were judges.

He had died in October. The glovebox still held his list in pencil: new points, one spare gasket, and a note reminding himself to fix the heart badge that had worked loose from the steering wheel. Nell found the badge wrapped in a woollen sock. She rubbed it on her sleeve until the V showed through the grime, then pressed it back into the boss, where it clicked into place with the same small sound it had always made.

She turned the key. The engine coughed, faltered, then roared, and the exhaust spat a tongue of blue flame into the cold. Through the open doors she could see the lane beyond the wall, a ribbon of tyre tracks already filling with snow. Ray would have said it would take a while to thaw. She put the car in gear anyway and rolled out to meet the plough.
