Fine line black script tattoo of the word love with a long swash line across a forearm, set against a plain white background.

Love script on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single word, love, is written in thin black script with a long, flowing line running from the left and curling up at the right. The linework is delicate and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black. The tattoo sits near the centre of a bare forearm, shown against a pale, plain background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Tregenza kept the washing line at Gull Hollow boarding house strung from the cliff gate to the old pear tree, and she never let guests touch the cord. "It carries things," she told them, and when they laughed she only pointed at the sea. That summer a lodger called Alder Finch, who painted boats badly and paid on time, asked her what sort of things.

"Words, mostly," she said, pegging out a bedsheet. "Whatever a person sends up on the wind, the line takes a little way along before it lets go." Alder thought she was teasing him. But the cord did hum in the evenings, a thin note like a wet finger on a glass, and the gulls sat along it in a row and would not fly off.

Two weeks later the Mary Jane did not come back into the bay. Mrs Tregenza went out to the gate every morning with her hands knotted in her apron. On the fourth morning Alder found her standing still beside the pear tree, looking up. Someone had tied a scrap of oilcloth to the cord, and on it, in ink that had survived the salt, was a single word. The letters ran long and thin and curled up at the end like a wave.

She untied it carefully and read it, then folded it into her pocket without a word. "Put the kettle on, Alder," she said at last. "They'll be wanting tea." Down the cliff path, three figures in yellow oilcloth were climbing up out of the spray, and the line along the gate lifted and sang once, low and bright, as if it had been holding its breath.
