Watercolour abstract on a forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A horizontal abstract design of soft colour washes in orange, red, pink, green, blue and purple, crossed by fine dark branching lines and small rounded forms. The colour blends into the skin with gradual fades, giving a painted, watercolour look. The design runs across the middle of the arm against a dark background with books and a patterned notebook.

The rain came through the cracked skylight of Tollgate Hall just as Aunt Bet began reading the vows, and it dripped straight into the paint jar you had set out for the guests. Nobody had asked you to paint anything in the end. Mara had wanted a guest book in watercolour, a sheet of cold-press paper pinned to an easel by the door, and you had spent the afternoon mixing rose madder and cobalt until your fingers were stained to the second knuckle.

When the thunder cracked over the car park, the hall went quiet and then loud, and the water found the paper before anyone could reach it. You watched the orange slide sideways like a fox running for a hedge, then the red pooled where a bridesmaid's elbow had knocked the jar. The grey lines you had drawn with a fine brush, meant to suggest cracks in the slate roof, ran straight through the colour and branched the way lightning does. Pebbles of clean white paper stayed bright in the middle of it all.
Afterwards, when the caterers were stacking chairs and the rain had thinned to a tick on the tin roof, you carried the sheet out to the car park to dry. Mara found you there with her shoes in one hand. She looked at the smeared rainbow and the dark branches running off the edge of the page, and said it was the first honest thing anyone had made all day.
You did not argue. You signed it in the corner with the date, propped it against the bins, and left it there for the evening light, which came through the clouds and let every colour run a little further into the next.
