Watercolour bird and leaves on a calf

Calf · Colour · Photo

A songbird in flight, with outstretched wings and a long pointed beak, sits beside a branch of leaves drawn inside circles. The bird uses soft, bleeding colour in greens, pinks, yellows and blues, with dark grey shading and loose splashes behind it. A small inset in the lower left shows the same design as black linework, likely an earlier stage on the skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The frost had not yet lifted off the cabbages when Nell Garrow heard the bird complaining from the top of the quince tree. It was no songbird she knew, slim as a needle and banded in green and rose, and it kept dropping its beak towards the gate as if it carried a message nobody would take.

Her father had left the garden to her and the gate to nobody. Every spring the old wall grew rings of rust-coloured lichen, and every autumn the leaves came down in circles around the sundial, and Nell had long ago stopped asking why. She took the bird a crust. It ate it, then flew at the bramble where the tin pail hung, and came back with a green twig in its beak, the leaves still pinned to it like coins.

She followed. Past the pear, past the pond gone the colour of weak tea, the bird led her to a hollow under the hazel where someone had planted a branch years before and forgotten it. Its leaves had grown in neat round rings, each one holding a little sky. Tucked inside the largest ring sat a tin box the size of a hymn book.

She opened it. Inside lay a letter from her mother, dated the spring she left, asking that the garden be kept for whoever came back looking for it. Nell tucked the box under her arm and whistled. The bird answered from the quince, and she went in for the kettle, leaving the gate open behind her for the first time in ten years.
