Watercolour circles and hearts on upper back
Back · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows loose black linework circles and drips, with a red outlined heart and a solid black heart above. Soft blue and purple washes and ink splatters sit behind and around the linework, which creates a painterly effect. The design is centred on the upper back against bare skin, with pink fabric visible at the top right corner.

Forty years she had restored watercolours for the auction houses in Ramsgate, and still the paper argued with her.

Her nephew Declan had left a biscuit tin of his late mother's sketchbooks on the counter with a note that said only, sort these, please. Inside, between pages of gull feet and bus timetables, were dozens of circles drawn in black fineliner. Some were closed. Some trailed off into a stroke that dripped down to the margin as if the pen had been tipped. Beside them sat a heart outlined in red, and a second heart, solid and black, hovering above it like a full stop.
She did not know what the circles meant. At half past eleven, with the kettle gone cold, she decided they were the sound of someone thinking out loud. She laid a wash of cerulean over the nearest page and let it run where it wanted. The black lines held firm while the colour wandered, and the splatter she had been taught to fear turned out to be the only part of the drawing that had been waiting for her.
By morning she had sorted forty sheets and kept none of them in their folders. She pinned the last one above the sink, the circles sliding gently into the purple, and went out to open the shop, leaving the rain to finish its own version.
