Fine line infinity heart tattoo with two names in script and soft blue and purple wash, on the back.

Infinity heart with script names

Fine line · Back · Mixed · Photo

A fine line infinity loop forms a heart shape, with two names written in cursive script across it. Black linework sits over soft blue, teal and purple watercolour-style shading that fades out at the edges. The tattoo is centred on smooth, lightly lit skin with a shallow depth of field.

The hall at Pellow Cross had a floor so worn that the boards dipped where the dancers turned, and every harvest the fiddler Corran played there until the lamps guttered. He never seemed to tire. His bow went up and down like a tide, and the tune he favoured had no last bar, only a turn that led back into the first.

Eilidh, the baker's daughter, had watched the dancers for three autumns before she asked him for it. "You'll want a partner whose name you can hold," he told her. He took a pot of blue ink from his coat and wrote her name on his own wrist, then wrote his on hers, though she had not asked for that. "Your partner writes yours. Then you dance until the tune comes round to the start, and by then you'll know whether you kept hold."

Tam, the carter's son, had hands full of splinters and a laugh that carried over the fiddle. He wrote Eilidh across his knuckles with a sharpened pin, and she wrote Tam along her forearm in the same blue, which ran at once into the sweat on her skin. They turned. The loop of the reel swung wider than the hall, the lamps went out one by one, and still the two of them went round without letting go.

At first light the boards were wet and the fiddle lay on a barrel with no one to play it. Eilidh found the flour sack by the oven. On it, in the blue that had seeped through her sleeve, were two names knotted together by a line that began nowhere and ended nowhere. Tam, when she showed him, only laughed and said the ink would fade in a season, though neither of them believed it.
