Ribs · Colour · Photo
A dragonfly with teal and pink wings sits near the upper right, with dandelion seed heads drifting down towards the lower left. The marquee flap kept lifting off the lawn, so Nell gave up holding it down and went out to the hedge instead. Her cousin Pearl was getting married at four, the speeches were due at five, and somewhere between the two Nell had promised to find a dandelion clock for the table centres. Every one she found in the car park's cracks had already gone to seed, which was no use to anybody.

Her grandfather used to say you should blow a dandelion on the day you wanted the truth. He had said it at his own wedding in 1971, and apparently that was the only useful thing he ever said on the subject. Nell crouched by the gate where the verge was still thick with them and picked the fullest head she could find. Along the ditch a dragonfly the colour of peppermint and bruised plum worked back and forth, stopping and starting like someone who had mislaid their keys and was too polite to say so.
Pearl came down the gravel in her dress, hitched up in both fists, barefoot and furious about the shoes. She took the clock from Nell without asking and held it up to the sun. "Did you ever tell Gran you wanted to live in Lisbon?" she said. Nell said she had not. "Well, you can tell me now." Nell opened her mouth and found she had nothing ready, so she blew instead, and the seeds went out over the field in a slow, untidy spray.
The dragonfly lifted and wheeled after them, then settled on the gatepost right beside Nell's hand. By the time they went back up the path the speeches had started without them, and nobody had noticed the missing centrepiece except Pearl, who laughed all the way to the top.
