Purple lotus flowers and butterfly on lower back
Botanical · Back · Colour · Photo
Three purple lotus flowers with layered petals sit on rippling water lines, and a purple butterfly with dark outlines hovers to the upper right. The petals use smooth gradient shading from deep violet to pale lilac, with fine dark linework defining the butterfly's wings. The tattoo covers most of the lower back, with the skin's natural tone and a black lace waistband filling the background.

Mara rowed out to Lantern Island before the mist lifted, the oars knocking softly in their locks. The lotus beds had doubled since spring, and she counted them the way her grandfather had taught her, one bloom for each winter the island had survived the flood. Three were new this year, their petals still pinched tight, and the water around them had gone the colour of a bruised plum where the light caught it.

A butterfly settled on the gunwale while she tied the boat. It was the violet kind that came over the hills in late summer, its wings edged in black like a line of writing done with a fine nib. She had never managed to keep one. Her grandfather used to say they came to see whether the flowers had finished growing, and once they were satisfied, they went looking for somewhere else to be.
She knelt at the water's edge and pressed her thumb into the mud beside the newest bloom. Under the silt, wrapped in oilcloth, was the tin box with his name scratched on the lid, and inside it the letter he had written to the mainland and never posted. Mara had read it twice already. She did not need a third time to know what it said about patience, and about roots.
When she looked up the butterfly had gone, and the ripples from her oar blade were spreading in long pale rings that lapped at the three flowers and steadied them. She left the box where it was, buried in the mud, where the roots could find it.
