Watercolour feather with birds on a thigh
Thigh · Colour · Photo
A large feather runs diagonally across the outer thigh, with its quill and barbs drawn in soft, blended strokes. Its colours move from orange and pink at the top through blue and teal to purple and green at the base, with splashes of paint-like colour spreading outward. Several small bird silhouettes in blue, red and orange trail off to the right, and the photo is taken close up with the rest of the skin out of focus.

The jay came down on the third day of the snow, and my mother said that jays only come down when they mean to carry something off. I didn't believe her until I found the feather tangled in the mule's halter at Sorrel Col, longer than my forearm and striped like a sunset someone had tried to wring out over a basin.

Ruth lived in the stone hut above the col, and she painted birds for the merchants in the lowland towns. Her pigment cakes had cracked on the river crossing that autumn, and she had been sending letters down with no birds in them, only empty outlines and apologies. When I put the feather on her table she didn't thank me. She dipped the quill in a jar of rainwater and drew it slowly along the grain of the paper, and the colours ran the way the snow ran off the ridges in spring. Orange slid into teal. Purple pooled at the base like a bruise going somewhere better. Green threaded through all of it and spat little bright drops onto the table.
Then the birds came up out of the paper. They were small things, swallows and finches and one fat blue thing that looked offended to be awake, and they lifted from the wet sheet and beat about the room until the candle guttered. Ruth didn't flinch. She said the feather had never been a feather. It was a page torn from the sky by a bird who had read too much, and the jay had only been returning it to the right owner.
I walked down the pass at dawn with the feather buttoned inside my coat. At the bottom, where the path meets the river, I opened my hand. One blue bird sat on my palm for a moment, unhurried, then rose over the valley toward the grey towns, leaving a smear of red on my skin that took three days to wash away.
