It is the one with the vine running round the edge: the red blooms with their purple shadows, the pink buds that look like they are about to speak, and the small blue flowers crowding the top corner as if they are waiting to be asked a question. You always said the vine ran off the edge because I grew bored of it. I did not grow bored. I kept my hand moving and the pattern kept going, down past the hem and round again, the way Grandmother taught me, so that it never seems to end, only to turn.

I left the very last bud unfinished, a pale shape with no colour in it. Grandmother did the same on her wedding linen, and she told me it was not a mistake but an invitation. Bring the red thread when you come up. Bring the blue too, the dark one you hated. I will not go out to the pass to look for you. I will sit by the stove with the cloth on my knee and wait for the needle to find its way back to the bud.
