Watercolour figure tattoo on a calf
Calf · Colour · Photo
A figure in red and dark clothing sits on a blue form near the ankle, surrounded by soft-edged purple, pink and orange washes. The shading is soft and blended with no hard outlines, and the colour spreads upward in a wavy band that fades toward the knee. The leg is shown from the side against a grey wall and red pavement, with rolled denim shorts and grey shoes visible.

The dyeworks sat on the river below the castle of Harrowmere, and every evening the vats gave off a smoke that the people called the king's breath. Nobody asked Maren, the dyer's daughter, what she thought of it, because nobody asked a girl who spent her days on the blue slab of stone at the water's edge with her knees drawn up under her chin.

The stone had been cut from a blue pigment seam before the old mines closed, and it kept the cold of the river even in August. Maren had learned to sit still on it until the smoke drifted close enough to touch. When it did, it clung to her sleeves and her hair and turned the colour of plums, then of marmalade, and she would breathe it in and out, slowly, until the vats cooled and the river went quiet.
One autumn the king's tax-man came down with a ledger under his arm. He said every colour in the valley belonged to the crown. He counted the vats, the bolts of cloth and the stoppered jars, and then he tried to count the smoke too, writing each puff in a column. Maren watched him try to write down purple and saw the ink go grey on the page before he could finish the word.
That night she went down to the stone and let the smoke come to her, as it always did. It did not rise up towards the castle as the king expected. It slid off her shoulders and into the river, which carried it down through every village in the valley, until the tax-rolls of Harrowmere were stained with pink and violet fingerprints. The tax-man scrubbed at his cuffs for a week and never once found the colour he had been sent to take.
