Watercolour hummingbird on a forearm

Forearm · Colour · Photo

A hummingbird in mid-flight with its long beak extended and its wings raised, shown on the outer forearm. The bird is built from soft washes and loose splatters of blue, purple, red, yellow and green, with darker outlines around the head and wings. The plain grey textured rug behind the arm keeps the focus on the colourful design.

The hummingbird came down the Mesa Road the week the pump at Alvarez's station ran dry. Folk said it was a bad omen, since nothing that small should carry itself so far from the river. It hung at the diner window with its long beak aimed at the sugar bowl, and its feathers were the colours the town had lost: the blue of the reservoir, the red of the chillies Ruth grew before the drought, the yellow of the school bus that no longer ran.

Old Ines Varga kept a paint box under her bed. She had painted the road signs for forty years, and the heat had cracked her pans to powder. At dusk she carried a jar of water out to the step and dipped her last brush in it. The bird came to the brush and drank, slow and careful, the way a child takes medicine.

"Take what you need," she said, "but bring back the rain." The bird did not answer. It lifted off the step, and wherever its wings brushed the dust they left a wash of colour: blue on the fence posts, purple on the bottle caps, green across the cracked bed of the wash. Dutch swore the splashes were the exact shade of the sky before dawn.

Three days later the bird came back with its wings gone grey and its head bowed. Ines swept the colour off her step into the jar and poured it into the water tank. The first drops fell on the road like a dropped brush, each one opening a bright bloom in the dust.
