Watercolour hummingbird on a shoulder

Shoulder · Colour · Photo

A hummingbird with outstretched wings and a long beak is shown in mid-flight. The linework is soft and painterly, built from loose washes of green, blue, pink, orange and yellow, with dark accents and scattered paint-like splatters around the bird. The bird is centred against plain, pale skin, with the edge of a dark area visible at the top right.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had mixed the cobalt too thin again, and it ran down the cabin wall in a bluish tear before she could stop it. Her father would have something to say about that when he came back up from the lock. She dabbed at it with a rag, which only spread it wider, so she gave up and stood back with the brush dripping from her fingers to see what the mess wanted to be.

The barge had been her grandmother's, and the panelling was painted every summer with roses and castles in the old narrowboat manner. Nell had never liked castles. She liked things that moved. Outside the open hatch the cut was the colour of weak tea, and above the towpath a line of willows was humming with a sound she took at first for a fly against glass.

It was a hummingbird, or something like one, a green flash with a beak as fine as a darning needle. It hung in the doorway with its wings a blur, then dropped onto the wet blue smear and drank from it. When it lifted, its wings had picked up colour, and it went round the cabin scattering pink and orange across the air, flicking spots onto the curtains and the lamp, before it shot out over the water.

Her father came back at dusk and found the wall running with new colour, a bird in full flight spreading across the panel in washes that bled into one another. He stood a long time with the lock key in his hand. "Well," he said at last, "your grandmother would have kept that." Nell did not tell him she had not painted it. She only wiped her hands and left the cabin door open.
