Watercolour lion on a chest
Realism · Chest · Colour · Photo
A lion's face is shown head-on, with a detailed muzzle, whiskers and eyes at the centre of the design. The mane and background dissolve into loose splashes and runs of pink, orange, purple, turquoise and black ink. The shading is soft and the composition is centred on the chest, with the bare torso filling the frame.

The tin of ochre has rolled under the bench again, and you are on your knees in the sawdust of the boatyard at Porthlow, reaching past the bilge pump for it. Your father is shouting from the slipway that the tide will not wait for paint to dry. Beyond the open doors the harbour is the colour of wet slate, and two gulls are fighting over a crab pot.

The commission is a lion for the bow of the Maud Ellery, a sixty-foot ketch whose owner wants something fierce enough to frighten the Norwegian boats. Your father draws it first in pencil, clean and exact, the whiskers as fine as wire. But when he finally dips his brush you notice his hand is not steady. He wants the mane to run like wine down a glass, so he flicks on the ochre, then the magenta, then the turquoise he bought for the lettering, and lets them bleed into each other while the varnish is still wet.
On the Saturday the owner comes down to look, arms folded, and says the thing appears to have been caught in a paint storm. Your father says nothing. You stand beside him holding a rag and watch the owner's face as the sun slides round the harbour wall and strikes the lion's eyes, which have stayed sharp through all that splashing. The owner unfolds his arms. He says he will take her anyway.
That evening you scrub at your fingers over the sink and find a thread of turquoise has lodged under one nail, a bright line you cannot get out. Your father says the sea will finish the lion for them, lifting the colours off a little more each winter until only the fierce eyes are left. You walk home along the quay with the light going, the paint still under your nail, and look back once at the boat in the harbour, the lion already loosening in the wind.
