Lion in feather headdress on ribs

Realism · Ribs · Mixed · Photo

A realistic lion's face wearing a large feathered headdress with a patterned teal band across the forehead. The shading is smooth and detailed, with fine strands in the mane and feathers and soft grey tones around the eyes and nose. The design fills the side of the torso, with the feathers spreading upward and the mane tapering toward the lower ribs.

The teal band had frayed at the left end again, and Ida Brennock sat with it across her knees while the lamps burned down in the weaving hall at Vessary. Outside, the lion wardens were shouting over the tide, the way they always did before the spring floods. Ida did not look up. She knew the pattern of diamonds by heart, eleven to a row, each one picked out in thread her grandmother had dyed from river alder.

The crown itself belonged to the Maned Throne, and no one had worn it in forty years. Its feathers had been gathered one moult at a time from the herons of the Sallow marsh, and the old lion king, Corvan, had kept it in a cedar box under his bed. When he died in the wet season, the box was carried up the hill by four sons who could not agree on anything, and by the time it reached the hall the lid had been pried loose and a single grey feather lay on the flagstones.

Her nephew Teo found it first. He was nine, all paws and questions, and he wanted to know why the crown had to be stitched at all if it was only going to sit in a box. Ida told him the band was what held the feathers upright, and that without it they would scatter in the first wind. He nodded, took the feather, and carried it down to the reeds at dusk, where the herons were folding themselves into the grass for the night.

Ida finished the band by lamplight and set it beside the empty box. In the morning the feathers were gone and the crown was only a loop of teal cloth. Teo was waiting at the marsh edge with his shoulders up, ready to be scolded. Instead she sat down beside him and watched the herons lift one by one, grey against the dawn, as if someone had finally given them back their own.
