Watercolour rose and bird on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A pink rose on a thin stem with teal leaves rises up the forearm, above a stylised bird with teal and red wing shapes. A small pink heart sits at the lower edge of the design, and loose pink and red wash marks surround the rose. The linework is dark and fine, with the colour applied as soft, bleeding washes in pink, red, teal and purple against a pale blurred background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The last wagon still on the Harrow and Vell lot has a rose on its door, and on Sunday you are the one kneeling in the wet grass with a brush, because nobody else alive knows how to make the petals bleed the right way. The ring behind you is already sold. The tent went to a farmer in Kent, the elephants went north in a lorry with orange rope tied across its tailgate, and the buyer's man has left a paper on the step saying the wagons will be broken for scrap by Friday.

Your grandmother Ines painted all of them. She taught you when you were nine, sitting on an upturned bucket with a jar of rainwater: keep the line dark and fine, she said, and let the colour go where it wants. Wash always runs past the place you stop. The rose was her first, a pink flush over an ink stem, with teal leaves that look like they are shrugging in the wind. Underneath it she put a hen on the flank of the flying wagon, red and teal wings spread the way the aerialist Lotte used to spread her arms before the drop.

You paint until the light goes. The hen's wings you do exactly as Ines did, the blue dragged down into violet at the tips, the red feathers lifted out with the wet corner of the brush. When the wash starts to dry in the cold, you do not fix it. You take a last dab of pink and make a small heart near the bottom of the door, where she always signed. On Monday the man comes with his clipboard, stops, and reads the rose twice before he says anything at all.
