Watercolour flowers on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A forearm carries large loose flower designs, drawn with thin black linework and filled with soft pink, orange and yellow washes. Dark splatter marks and drips run across the design and the skin around it. The arm is cropped near the wrist and elbow and sits against a black background and a plastic-covered surface.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The cook on the coaster Lantern Mary kept her seed tins on a shelf above the range, and every winter she counted them out loud, the way other women counted their children. Rye, barley, dried peas, and at the back a tin with a dent in its lid that held poppy seed from a garden in Hull that no longer existed. Nobody aboard had asked what it was for. They ate her bread and forgot to wonder.

When the ship was caught in the ice off the Norwegian coast, the stores ran thin, and the mate ordered the last of the flour shared out by weight. Mary would not hand over the poppy tin. She sat with it on her knees by the stove and told the boy who brought her water that the seed would open when the thaw came, if somebody watered the paint. He thought she was mad. Maybe she was. She took a brush from her apron pocket, a pot of red ochre, and a stub of soot ground in lard, and she painted poppies on the galley wall in long thin lines, flower heads open like startled hands.

The thaw came in March. The ship limped into Leith with ochre running down the whitewash where the damp had got under it, and the men said the galley looked like it had been shot at. Mary scraped nothing off. She said the drips were the bloom and the petals had to fall somewhere.

By June the boy was carrying sacks ashore, and he saw a sprawl of red by the coal sheds, poppies pushing up through the cinders where a spill of seed had been swept out and forgotten. He crouched beside them for a long time. Then he went back aboard and asked Mary for a brush, and she gave him one without a word.
