Colourful watercolour-style skull tattoo in blue, pink, orange and green with black splatter marks on the upper arm.

Watercolour skull on upper arm

Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A large skull is tattooed on the upper arm, with its outline in fine black linework. The skull is filled with loose washes of blue, pink, orange, green and yellow, with darker black shading in the eye sockets and nose. Black speckles and a thin drip line add splatter detail around the skull on a pale skin background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The last tin of cobalt cracked open on the Tuesday the recyclers went down, and Odile knelt over the dust as if it had been a sister. Nobody on Halden Ring laughed. Forty years under grey dome-light had taught us what colour costs, and the cost was always someone's ration.

I got the skull job because I could hold a brush steady through a shift on half a meal. The old design came from a salvage crate, a print pressed on paper gone brittle as toast. Odile had marked the clearest one with her thumbnail: a skull outlined thin as a hair, its bone filled with runs of blue, rose and orange that bled into each other as if they had never heard of borders. She said the stains were the point. Let the water decide where the colour goes, she said.

So I let it. I mixed what we had: lichen dye from the hydroponic gutters, mineral scraped off the hull plates, and a smear of the blue Odile had been hiding in her sleeve. I dropped it onto the brow and watched it run. Where it pooled I left it. Where it spat I flicked black specks outward with the tip of a bristle, a little constellation of accidents, and drew one thin drip line from the jaw because the picture wanted something to fall.

When the lights came up for the morning cycle, the whole crew crowded in to look. Odile held the mirror. For a moment the grey walls were gone and the skull was grinning in every colour we had been saving. "Well," she said, "now it's been spent properly." We let it dry and went back to work.
