Watercolour skull on a thigh
Traditional · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A large skull is drawn in grey shading with dark outlines, set against loose splashes of pink, red, purple, blue and green that resemble watercolour washes. The skull is shaded with soft greys and sharp black accents around the eye sockets and teeth. The photograph is taken close up on the outer thigh, with the colour washes spreading across the skin and dripping downward at the bottom of the design.

The rain had come off the col before you reached the hut, and by the time the mule train stopped at the spring your paper was already swollen and wrinkled as a drowned glove. Old Teodor did not look at it. He unstrapped the wooden box, lifted out the tin of pigment cakes, and asked whether you meant to paint the pass or argue with it.

You painted the pass for three days. You painted the scree in ochre, the lichen in a green Teodor said was poison to sheep, and the snowfield in a violet you had to mix from two tins that did not want to be friends. Every evening you rinsed the brush in the spring and watched the colour run off your fingers into the stones, pink and blue, and swore the mountain was taking a tithe.
On the fourth morning a skull sat on the path where the ledge narrowed. It was a sheep's, bleached to bone, and you nearly walked past it. Then you crouched and saw that someone had set it facing the valley, and that the wind had worn its eye sockets into two clean bowls full of rain. You wet the paper. You drew the cheekbone in soft grey, let the wash bleed into the dark, and when the colour ran down the page in drips you did not stop it.
Teodor came up the path at noon and stood over your work for a long time. That is not the pass, he said at last. That is what the pass does to people who stay too long. Then he handed you a heel of bread, and you ate it looking at the skull while the paint dried into the page.
