Watercolour skull with feather splashes on upper arm

Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A human skull in profile sits on the outer upper arm, with a feathered headdress shape rendered as loose blue, pink, purple and orange washes. Black outlines and fine drips run down from the skull, while the bone itself is left pale with soft grey shading. The colour splashes dominate the composition, and the tattoo is photographed against a plain dark background.

Nadia had been warned that the lift in Carrow House only worked on Tuesdays, so she climbed fourteen flights with a bucket of water, a box of paints and a dead man's easel knocking against her hip. Mr Okafor's flat on the ninth floor had been emptied by his nephew, who had left the watercolours behind with a note saying the landlord would bin them otherwise.

Inside, the cartridge paper was stacked against the skirting boards, and every sheet held the same skull. Each one sat in profile, facing the window, with a headdress of washes: blue bleeding into pink, purple feathers falling away like smoke, a bead of orange hanging over the brow like a low sun. Some were dry and crisp. Others had bloomed where the damp had got in, and the colours had run into the margins as if the paper had wept.

The last sheet was unfinished. Black drips ran down from the jaw where the old man had let the ink go, and a single pencilled line marked where the feathers should end. The nephew had said he painted the same skull every winter and never once signed it off. Nadia pulled the chair to the window, where the estate spread below in grey squares, and dipped the brush.

She painted until the light gave up. She let the blue run where it wanted and did not correct the orange when it swallowed the pink. In the morning she pinned the sheet to the notice board by the lift, where the drips ran down the cork like rain. A neighbour stopped to look at it on the way to the post. Nadia realised, watching him frown, that she had no intention of finishing it either.
